Michael VIII Palaeologus, 1261-1282. Hyperpyron (Gold, 30 mm, 4.40 g, 6 h), Constantinopolis. Bust of Virgin Mary, orans, within city walls furnished with six groups of towers and flanked by MH and ΘV. Rev. Emperor kneeling slightly to right, being presented by Archangel Michael to Christ enthroned slightly to left and holding scroll in his left hand; to left and right, traces of legend; between Christ and Michael, Π. SB 2242. Struck on a particularly large flan and with an unusually attractive obverse. Some light scratches, otherwise, very fine.
